There Are Only Two types of "HERPES SIMPLEX", that I Know of, Differentiated By Site of Infection, but Not Significantly Genetically Different. There Are Many Herpesviruses, e. g., to Name a Few, CMV, EBV, VZV. This Might Be Helpful: http://www.virology.net/Big_Virology/BVHomePage.html

Type 1 herpes "typically" occurs in the oral region.

Type 2 herpes "typically" occurs in the genital region.

Both types are spread by direct skin to skin contact. You'll notice that both of these areas are rich in mucous membranes (which is why more women than men tend to acquire genital herpes). The thinner skin in a man in that region also contributes. If you have any breaks in your skin (a minor cut on a finger, for instance) you could be susceptible to acquiring it there (called a herpes whitlow). Wrestlers may get it around the chest area from those warm sweaty wrestling holds.

Either type can occur in either region, and type 1 is responsible for about 1/3 of all new genital herpes cases, from oral sex. This is especially common around the younger set, which is how sometimes virgins get genital herpes.

As the other poster with the nice long (very informative!) answer mentioned the types and regions are considered 'site of preference' meaning that those types tend to be more active when they are acquired in their "home" region. Type 1 in the genital region or type 2 in the oral region are less likely to re-occur (but they can!).

Those are just the basics -- basically skin to skin contact with an infected area has to occur. Outbreaks are not always obvious, the most typical thing about herpes is its tendency to show up in atypical forms (no blisters).

I got identified with herpes virus (type 2) about 4 years ago, whilst I was still in college and had a mindless one-night stand. I realize a lot of people say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a massive mistake that one time and all of a sudden I felt like I was going to have to live with the consequences for my entire life. The hardest part was feeling I could never date guys again. In the end, who wants to go out with a girl who has sores around her private parts? But since a friend shared this movie https://tr.im/tS2lb everything changed.

Not only was I able to remove all remnants of the hsv from my body in less than 3 weeks, but I was also able to begin dating again. I even met the man of my dreams and I'm so blessed to write that just a week ago, in front of everybody in a crowded restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me!!! This system provided the chance to be happy and experience true love again. Now I want to help others too by sharing this story.

Herpes 1 simplex is not an STD. It is basically a cold sore. Herpes 2 is an STD.

Well I have it so I will be straight up honest and everything with ya.... WEll you most like got HSV 2 that is most common in the private area HSV 1 is the cold sore type you HSV is the more serious one.... Both can be managed though. Look into these medications to take to stop a breakout Valtrex and Acyclovir. Do not kiss anyone while you have an outbreak also do not have sex with your girl while she has an outbreak its not as bad as people think it is because it is manageable but just be careful and good luck...

Definition: A family of viruses. Herpes also refers to infection with one of the human herpes viruses, especially herpes simplex types 1 and 2. Herpes simplex type 1, also known as human herpesvirus 1 (HHV-1), causes cold sores and fever blisters in the mouth and around it. Herpes simplex type 2, also known as human herpesvirus 1 (HHV-1), causes genital herpes, a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Genital herpes is characterized by sores in the genital area.

Both herpes simplex types 1 and 2 are capable of causing systemic disease including encephalitis (infection of the brain) in someone who is immunodeficient. The treatment of infection with herpes simplex infections is by topical or oral anti-viral medication.

Under a microscope, HSV- 1 and 2 are virtually identical, sharing approximately 50% of their DNA. Both types infect the body's mucosal surfaces, usually the mouth or genitals, and then establish latency in the nervous system. For both types, at least two-thirds of infected people have no symptoms, or symptoms too mild to notice. However, both types can recur and spread even when no symptoms are present.

The primary difference between the two viral types is in where they typically establish latency in the body- their "site of preference." HSV-1 usually establishes latency in the trigeminal ganglion, a collection of nerve cells near the ear. From there, it tends to recur on the lower lip or face. HSV-2 usually sets up residence in the sacral ganglion at the base of the spine. From there, it recurs in the genital area .

Even this difference is not absolute either type can reside in either or both parts of the body and infect oral and/or genital areas. Unfortunately, many people aren't aware of this, which contributes both to the spread of type 1 and to the misperception that the two types are fundamentally different.

A factor influencing the frequency of HSV -1 and 2 outbreaks is whether the virus is established in its site of preference. While HSV can infect both genital and oral areas, both types cause milder infections when they are away from "home" territory. Outside their site of preference, both type 1 and 2 lose most of their punch.

For example, most people infected with HSV-1 in the genital area have few, if any, outbreaks after the initial episode, far fewer than is typical with either oral HSV-1 or genital HSV-2. While experts estimate that some 30% of genital herpes infections in the United States may be caused by HSV-1, only 2- 5% of recurring genital outbreaks are caused by HSV-1. Research shows that genital HSV-2 recurs 10 times more often than genital HSV-1.

Similarly, HSV-2 infection outside its site of preference-very rarely causes problems. Oral HSV-2 infections are rare, but even when an infection occurs, recurrent outbreaks are uncommon.

Acquisition of one type is more difficult-though certainly possible-if you already have the other type. This is because either type, contracted orally or genitally, causes the body to produce antibodies, some of which are active against both HSV-1 and 2. This acquired immune response gives some limited protection if the body encounters a second type. When a person with a prior HSV infection does contract the second type, the first episode tends to be less severe than when no prior antibodies are present.
