they say he was persecuted, because of his faith.

What kind of history, the article doesn't say much of anything. Disorderly conduct? Right now you can be charge with that in Canada for publicly speaking out against the gay lifestyle. Imagine what it would have been like in the 1800 when the church controlled so much of early American politics.

Despite the lies and myths perpetuated about Joseph Smith, all the charges laid against him were trumped up and eventually dismissed. The last time he was in jail (Carthage, Illinois--27 June 1844) he and his brother, Hyrum, were murdered by organized mobocrats sanctioned by the governor who conveniently looked the other way.
Until you get the full story from a reputable source you will remain blinded, a person without faith. That is unfortunate for you.

The same thing Muslims will tell you when faced with the early bandit history of Mohammad when his religion was weak and not growing, deny it vehemently and say he was prosecuted by society for his faith.

I guess you feel the same about Paul and Peter, since they were arrested and killed too. You would also condemn even Jesus as a convicted law breaker.
Frontier justice was mob rule not unlike Jim Crow in latter years.

uh -DUH! We all know he was arrested and falsely accused of everything...He was arrested 39 times! Never convicted of anything because he never did anything - other than claim he saw God the Father and Jesus Christ and organize THEIR church.. and people hated and despised him for that. How dare he, a young boy, claim he saw a vision? That must be worse than any other criminal out there!
Why do you think he was so hated and still is? I believe because of Satan, plain and simple. Notice how many many other churches and religions have been started and VERY few are fought against so hard and so much slander spread about as the Mormon church. Satan knows it is the Lord's church and he doesn't want others to.
I don't put my faith in Joseph, I put my faith in God and he has answered my prayers. I know Joseph was truly a prophet of the Lord, that he saw and spoke with God the Father and Jesus Christ, that he literally is the prophet who ushered in the last dispensation of the gospel. I know he loved our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ more than himself otherwise he would have never done all that he did. I know that and I love him for it and can't wait to meet him someday in the eternities!

That is old news to me. Joseph Smith went to jail for swindling his followers too. Brigham Young made the Mormon Church an economic entity and established it in Utah. Smith had little to do with it west of the Mississippi for obvious reasons.
