I've been a vegan for around two years now (vegetarian before for 8 years), and though I am extremely content with how my lifestyle has changed, both in its morally uplifting qualities and health benefits, I still continue to be harassed by friends. It starts out as a joke I guess because I'm the only vegan I know, but it tends to continue indefinitely.

I'm asking this because I'm wondering if I'm the only one that seems to be going through with this. What do you do in a situation that there's a pizza in the room and everyone's literally shoving it in your face? Do you back away or try to deal with it another way?

I agree with the people that say you need new friends. I have been a vegetarian for 15 years and a vegan for the past 2. I am the only vegan I know (saving for one friend who lives across the country). I usually try to do my best not to make a big deal out of food situations. Usually if I even mention that I can't eat the pizza or whatever, people will start to tease and try and get under my skin. It's like opening the door for their stupidity.

If you can, try to bring something when you are going somewhere that you know there will be food. Even if it's just some pretzels (so no one makes fun of your carrots or other *gasp* healthy food if you are worried about that). If you are eating something that everyone else can eat also, even if you brought it, then they won't notice as much and will likely ease off a bit.

Ugh! I have the identical specified hindrance. Like... such a lot of cosmetics are constructed from discarded materials of animals like eyes and bloody organs. It's so tough to simply be Vegan in an international stuffed with shampoos and conditioners constructed from fabricated cow lungs and disorder infested roadkill. It's rather disgusting! I would as good chop a kittens head off and rub it everywhere my face after which roast it on a stick correct? It perhaps tasty.

Ya know, I used to have that trouble years ago, and people would do exactly what you mentioned...usually accompanied by saying, "Mmmmm!" I couldn't have those things because I was allergic to many, many things including dairy, wheat and certain other things. I discovered that when I said I couldn't have them because of allergies, their attitudes completely changed and they helped by keeping the foods away. I've outgrown those allergies, now, but my mother's been a vegetarian for 8+ yrs now, and when people gave her grief, I told her to tell them she has food allergies. Works like a charm.
