I have had diabetes since I was a year and three months old (that means 20 years) lol. Here is the best thing I can give you advice on:
READ ALL THE LABELS! look at serving size, carbs, and sugars. try to eat the serving size, or less than.
Carbs make your blood sugars go higher. I actually suggest to go and buy a book that lists all the carbs calories and sugar in everything you could possibly want to eat. Its helped me a lot.
Cut down on eating a lot of bread. Example: You get a hamburger. Cut it in half, or only eat the meat with one piece of bread.
Oh and be aware of fruits, they are naturally sugared! a half of a banana is 30 carbohydrates.
I have also heard few rumors about eating doses of Cinnamon, but im not quite sure if thats true or not.
I am not sure if you are insulin dependent or not, but if you are, make sure to give yourself the right amount of insulin for all of the food you are taking.

First off, you need to follow the plan that your doctor has put you on. Another thing is to actively do that plan.
I live with a diabetic father and cousin, so I understand exactly what happens with diabetes.
One thing is to definetely follow your doctor's plan and another is to take the medication because some of the ramifications of not doing what you are supposed to be doing can lead to blindness, have a foot that becomes infected because a wound never wants to heal and needs to be taken off.
Okay, now here is some simple math and some very good advice that my father's doctor gave to our family. Lets say you can eat only a 180 grams of carbohydrates a day, breaking it down to sixty carbs a meal or anything process of doing it is fourty carbs a meal with the allowance of three snacks at twenty carbs a piece.
another trick that we use is finding the out how many sugars are in food and then looking at the dietry fibar and the amount of carbs. Usually looking at the sugar disencourages our family from buying the said product.
Drink water and milk regularly. Diet sodas in moderation.
Have your tests that you need to have done to let you know how good or how badly you have done current with your doctor.
I will say this, I am not a dietary specialist nor am I intending to doctor you here. What I am suggesting is stuff that has helped out my family in the long run.

You have to be evaluated by a Doctor or Hospital. Here the Health Care Professionals will direct you on the use of Insulin and assist you with Menu preparations , Exercise, etc.
It might take sometime if you are a newly discovered Diabetic, but with patience, and Prayers, you will be able to handle it.

Lots of studies have shown that daily doses of cinnamon and getting an adequate amount of chromium are very effective at controlling blood sugar and diabetes.

Check your blood sugar often and keep a daily log with times of what you eat and drink (and the carbs in it), your activity levels, your blood sugar levels, and your doses of medication. Eventually you will be able to figure how things affect you and you can adjust things accordingly to get better control.
