That if I were to kill an animal such as a dog, or cat, any animal for that matter, I would be in legal trouble, but when a slaughter house brutally hacks pigs, and cows to death, they dont have animal cruelty charges? I mean its perfectly legal for them to slaughter a cow but I cant kill an animal. Why is this?

It's social conditioning and makes no sense at all.

In some countries they eat cats and dogs, in this country (UK) you get sent to court if you abuse them. In this country cows, pigs, lambs, birds etc are regularly tortured and slaughtered to death but hardly anyone opens their eyes to see the cruel irony. I bet people here would be sickened if they went to China and saw cat and dog meat, but just because here it's a cow apparently it's "meant to be eaten?" Give me strength. Imagine the uproar if people here started slaughering and cooking their cats for food! No one cares about the millions of cows that have to suffer this every single day because people have been conditoned in this country to believe that cows have no right to live, but cats do. It's a very sad situation.

It's social conditioning. It's not about what animal is suitable for what or meant for what purpose, it's just social conditioing, pure and simple.

Why are you asking this question on here and not looking at the specific laws for your area? If you kill an animal "Just because I want it dead", yea, I can understand why there would be legal ramifications. But, if you kill the animal for a specific use, like food, leather, or fur, or if the animal is suffering and prolonging its life is more cruel than killing it, I don't see how it is a problem.

To address something said a couple of answers down, I've never tasted dog or cat meat, but if someone were to offer it to me, I would try it. I've had ducks, chickens and a pig for pets when I was growing up(I lived on a farm). I don't like the way duck meat tastes(but there eggs are kinda sweet and are good over-easy), and I like chicken and pork. Animals have many uses, pets and food being two of them.

Because we're part of a cruel, hypocritical world.

There's no logic behind it at all. Whoever made the point of "what are you gonna do with a dead dog?", they should know that there are parts of the world who breed dogs for food. Saint Bernards, specifically. Apparently it has a "richer flavor" than other dog meat. And there are some parts of the world that cows are sacred and killing them is a horrible sin.

So who decides which animals are tortured and slaughtered legally and which ones are cuddled and loved?

It doesn't make any sense. It's true hypocrisy.

I have no clue. And they DO torture the pigs, cows, horses, etc. I saw a show on how they kill them. It is truly SICK. As Leonardo Da Vinci said, " The time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look on the murder of men". I totally believe in this saying. I don't think some people have very kind hearts.

Lets look at this from my perspective. I'm not a vegan. A cow is killed. Every piece of the cow has a purpose - food, leather, gelatin, dog/cat food...etc. *Nothing* goes to waste. You would be surprise what companies use the resources of a cow.

What are you going to do with a dead dog?

P.S. - Rendering plants don't brutally hack animals to death. There are laws. It is done quickly.

I'm also curious if you have ever worn cashmir, or used hand lotion with lanolin in it.......because there is nothing vegan or vegetarian about that.

Exactly, animals like cows and pigs aren't that different from dogs.i'm sure 100% of people that have dogs as pets would never eat a dog,but they don't think twice before they eat ham, chicken, steak and other types of meats.

Animals that are meant to be food must be killed before they can become food, and animals meant to be pets do not need to be killed before they can become pets.

Exactly. It's completly disgusting and inhumane in both ways.
