I am 30 weeks pregnant and have gestational diabetes.I have to go on insulin shots starting Monday. My hubby's friend said his wife had to go on that during pregnancy and he started laughing and said it totally changed his wife.Do you have any idea what he could mean?Does insulin affect you in a strange way?Are there side affects? Please help-I am worried about what it would do.

My wife had the very same thing while pregnant and was seen by a specialist for this during her pregnancy. The baby is a very typical 2nd grader with no issues thank goodness. However - after the pregnancy no follow-up was given by that specialist nor did her GYN doctor caution her about proper dieting and excercising due to this - Now she is a Type 1 that has to inject herself twice a day. The only bad thing is wondering if she could have avoided this had she been told to be careful. We never understood what diebetic was until this happend. 5 years later she is still injecting herself and is probably healthier that i am since she now controls her diet and excercises. Once in a while I can see it in her eyes that she would rather due without it!!!! Take very good care of yourself during and after the pregnancy. You will be fine now that you have started asking questions.

It sounds as if your hubby's friend is being insensitive and cruel and not behaving like a friend at all. Insulin may be a bit inconvenient but it will not change you in any way except that you will feel better and so will your baby. Ask your husband to have a serious talk with his friend or if you think that he is so macho try calling his wife and let her know what he said. Your hubby's friend is likely to be sleeping in the garage until the 2nd Coming of Christ. I wish you and your baby the very best of health.

My little sister is a type 1 diabetic, and she used to have insulin shots (she now gets her insulin from a pump). The insulin from the shot will do the same things as the insluin your body makes. It will do no more, and will do no less. There should be do side effects, unless you are allergic. All this insulin will do is lower your blood sugar to a healthy rate. You'll be fine!

Insulin is the safest drug in pregnancy.Being gestational diabetic means you are at the risk of being diabetic in future. So take consultation from dietitian and take insulin.Do not worry.

You should ask him what he meant.
You will not feel any different except a bit more clarity when your sugars go down to normal.

Don't worry so much about it.Pregnancy is a time to think of your baby.
Congrats !
