Have to cough but am never short of breath--- essentially, it is just a ticklish throat. Could this be something other than asthma? It is worse when I am hot, cold water helps much better than hot water. Alergy meds do not seem to really help, so wondering what the cause could be. Have had this at least 10 years.

Hi! I just answered the Q, but had an interruption and now I can't find my answer--it was re having "silent reflux" and not knowing it. Always had to clear my throat; had respiratory problems/illnesses. After a 12-day stint in hospital, a pulmonary specialist told me it was due to gastric acids back-washing up my esophagus at night and leaking into my lungs. He said to sleep on a incline and VOILA! It stopped it all!
Good Luck--Please let us know what works for you!

I meant to include that I, too, was never short of breath! In fact I regularly walked a fast 4mph, 2 miles in 30 mins. with my '60s disco tape!

Now I'm breathin easy in all senses of the phrase!

I have had asthma since I was 1 (i'm 23 now) symptoms of asthma aren't always shortness of breath. It can be tightness in the chest, a slight "rattleing" noise when breathing, and basically not getting enough air to the lungs. Asthma is actually caused mucus build up in the airways that lead to the lungs which prevents an open, clear airway.

From what you've explained it seems that you do have asthma, but it doesn't sound severe. You might want to go to a specialist so see exactly what could be done for you. I know from experience how "uncomfortable" you may be. I have to deal with asthma and alergies, so it's no fun!

Hope I've helped! (o:

Not all Asthma manifests wtih shortness of breath or wheezing. Sometimes a cough is all that is present.

very unusual presentation for asthma
you may very well have (Gastric Reflux disease) causing trot discomfort & cough.
or Post-Nasal Drip (sinus problem)
i do not think you have asthma, you better se ENT-specialist & then internist to try some nexium because this may help if you have reflux.

Quick rapid breaths. They get all hyper when any person trys to buck their so-known as principles and regs. Come to suppose of it, typically they take lengthy and deep once they take their "espresso smash".
