Many people in South East Asia live in a chronic carrier state with HBV. It is transmitted through saliva, because many families have group meals and share everything - saliva carrying the virus goes from mouth to chopsticks to food and into someone elses mouth.

There are still lots of chances that you will be alright. You will need to be good to your liver. If you avoid alcohol and minimize your use of drugs which can affect the liver (paracetamol/acetaminophen) you should do well. Have safe sex - ie condoms - and don't share needles. You might want to have your food separate to other family members if you practice south east asian dining etiquette. I'll leave that up to you to decide.

Talk with your doctor.
