When the weather cools down and we turn up the heat & close the windows etc., a couple of things happen. Closing the windows keeps the viruses in our home air & on every surface. The warm/dry air dries out our nose & throat causing microscopic breaks in the surface. The viruses we breath in then infect us and we have a respiratory illness. A CLEAN room humidifier helps to keep the air moistend, preventing breaks in our respiratory tract surface. Also, the moisture helps to keep our phlem thinner, making it easier to cough it up and out. Moisture is one of the highest requirements for our bodies to function properly. Drinking lots of water is a necessity for our body's organs to function correctly and humidified air helps to keep our lungs healthy. Also, cooler air...not cold air, is healthier than hot air. Dress warmer and keep the thermostat down a little lower.

Cooling of air results in moisture content of air being reduced. To increase the moisture content, to which one is used, humidifiers are used. Normally dry conditions are good but they bring with them their own problems like chipped lips etc.

It makes it easier to breathe because the lining of the nose and throat dry out and moisture is a good thing for the mucus membranes.
