No, this is an orthodox Hindu/Buddhist thing and has nothing to do with vegetarianism directly. Onions and garlic supposedly interfere with spiritual development and are left out, along with meat. There may be a practical reason too (bad breath and body odor isn't too conducive to meditation).

Actually it's a belief of jains and some hindus that food that make you feel like meat should be avoided like onions mushrooms etc. Cuz, onion contains lot of similarities with meat and ancient people felt that onion provokes the thought of eating meat or itself makes people feel as if they eat meat. This is the reason why some hindus and jains who are strict vegetarians avoid onion and most of the people among them avoid onion especially on certain days.

What list is there that says vegetarians are "not allowed to eat onion"??!! Yes it's a vegetable. Every vegetarian that I know eats onions almost daily. I don't know where you got the idea that they can not but that is totally incorrect. That's like saying they can't eat lettuce!

Enjoying vegetables like onions and other natural foods is what vegetarianism is all about. I'm not sure either what resource you're using, but feel free to enjoy onions.

If you're eating any prepared foods with onions, do watch out for animal products (i.e. french onion soup made with beef broth)

Your list maker must have forgot a vegetable. If it's a vegetable, a vegetarian can eat it (assuming it has not bathed in the sinful waters of meat juice...hehe). Even then...even then, for a really good vegetable on a hungry day, I might eat it anyway.
