As a pharmacist, I cringe when someone uses the word "best." What works for you may not work someone else.
There are two approved over-the-counter (OTC) cough suppressants, dextromethorphan (DM) taken orally or menthol used topically (such as a spray or lozenge).
Hold DM Cough Lozenges are sometimes hard to find, but they contain DM to suppress the urge to cough. Most other cough drops contain menthol as a suppressant.
The "best" treatment for a cough is water. Adequate hydration will decrease the stickyness of mucus and allow it to be expectorated (meaning spit out). Most cough syrups contain guaifenesin (Robitussin) and may contain DM as well. Recent research has stated that guaifenesin may not be all that effective.
Best advice, drink plenty of fluids and get some rest.

Is it congested or just a tickle.....
If it's congestion you want to get Mucinex to break up the mucus in your lungs to force you to cough it out.
If you feel like something is tickling the back of your throat causing you to cough then try HALLS Vapor...it helps soothe your throat, also when you can spray Chloroseptic on the back of your throat.
