Is it me of do these things suck? You can't let loose as you would at a club of with the protection and anonymity they provide. Office parties are for losers...agree?

Survivor's Ready, your experience does sound like heaps of fun. I guess I just don't think that "partying" with people I work with as a fun situation. No, the party's not in the office, but in a hotel.

I don't think drinking, drugging, and being slutty is a "real party"...

It really all depends on who you work with and how well you get along with and enjoy their company. I feel like sometimes, the forced social gatherings just flop. I try to be cordial to everyone during work-time...but I find it hard and refuse to kiss the rear ends of people I really can't stand.
Once or twice a year is cool...but beyond that, I'd rather spend my own time with friends & family versus people I already see 40 hours a week.

Disagree...you must really work in a sucky office! Tho you can't let loose since you'll see most of these people the next workday. But then again, I personally wouldn't go to crazy in a club since it might be a place that I'll visit again, and you'd be surprised what people, especially regulars and staff in those clubs, remember! Besides, if the office party is planned right, it can be a lot of fun.
At ours, first it's not held at the office. They usually rent out a banquet facility. They tried having it at the office, but people didn't like partying where they worked! They hire a DJ (and he plays the latest songs), they've hired caricaturists to do pictures, the bar is open and the food is usually good. The company's Board chairman makes it a policy that you can't talk business, tho I'm sure there are a few who do, for the most part, people are there to have a good time and usually do.

Over-extended office meeting with food and drinks. If this is the whole office with superiors and direct reports, know that these same people can influence your future at that work place. It is always best to go (relax and enjoy it) then leave quickly than to not go at all. Then you can go somewhere else for a real party.

No, it's not a real party. It's an excuse to eat at work adn goof off, while stlil on the clock.
If it's off-site, at a restaurant or catering facility, then it's a bit more of a party, but you are still being scrutinized.

Well,I think they can be fun, like we usually have a great time. . . .but you are true, you can never REALLY relax 100% in fear of saying the wrong thing, etc. There is a young group of us that always have more fun after the bosses leave!
