These suggestions all sound very filling if you are planning on having a heavy Christmas dinner later in the day. You might think about keeping lunch light and simple (and easy to prepare as you don't want to clutter the kitchen before the main event).
Perhaps soup (a colorful winter soup such as squash or red pepper), with garlic bread and salad or some finger foods. Maybe throw in some alcoholic egg nog and roasted chestnuts to lighten the mood.

For an appetizer? Two words: "crackers" and "cheese." Always tasty. You could even get crackers that come in shapes. I know there's one brand that makes fancy shapes, like butterflies. You can usually find them at the grocery store. Soft cheeses are best. Try something French.

* 2 (8 oz.) pkgs. cream cheese, softened
* 1 cup, or 2 sticks butter (yes, 2 sticks!!) softened
* 1 small jar oil packed sun-dried tomatoes
* 10 oz. container refrigerated pesto
* 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
In medium bowl, beat cream cheese and butter until well blended. Mix pesto and cheese in small bowl. Line two 8 oz. custard cups with plastic wrap. Divide cream cheese mixture into four parts. Spoon 1/4 of cream cheese mixture into each custard cup.
Sprinkle each with 1/4 of the tomatoes. Spread 1/4 of the pesto mixture over tomatoes. Repeat layers until all the mixtures are used.
Fold plastic wrap over each torte, sealing well. Chill overnight until firm. Unmold, remove plastic wrap, and serve with crusty French bread slices or sturdy crackers. Serves 8 to 10

For a sweet dessert, take square shaped pretzels, place a rolo candy on top of each one, melt in oven 250 degrees for a few minutes then top with a pecan. They will be a hit, they are easy and taste like turtles. Have fun!

Hi, I am not sure what age group your dealing with for your party but I can tell you this, I was b-tender at private party for my buddy and there was a guest that brought cherry bombs. "Cherry Bombs" they are merichino, sorry I don't know how to spell that but anyway cherries soaked in everclear, sold at your specialty liquors store and served on a tooth pic and believe me your guests will be ever so delighted and just love anything you might have on your hourdervs menu. Guaranteed a party fun maker.
