You should know that Oral Herpes, as it is commonly known, and formally known as HSVI is definitely contagious whether your boyfriend is showing symptoms (sores, pain, zinging feeling, etc.) and can also transfer the virus to you even if he is NOT showing signs of symptoms (this is called viral shedding). If he does indeed have oral herpes and the mouth comes under some kind of trauma like intense dental work, this can cause a flare up of the oral herpes. He might not even notice the symptoms but coud shed the virus anyway. If you engage in oral sex, particularly him to you, (but not just that way only) the virus can be transferred to you genitally and thus becomes genital rather than oral but is is till considered of the viral type HSVI.
HSVII is typically known as genital herpes and is transferred most commonally sexually.
One of the reasons, but not all of the reasons, that HSVI is distinguished from HSVII is because THE VIRUS itself attached itself to your body in specific areas and will make a home there (reside there in your body)
HSVI will find the main nerve path in the face/jaw and therefore is called "oral herpes" cause it's "home" is closest to the mouth (oral)
HSVII will find the main nerve path in the base of the spine and therefore is termed "genital herpes" because it's "home " is closest to the genital region.
If you have been exposed to herpes for the first time and art starting to show symptoms yourself, you usually get (butnot always) like a zingging feeling through that main nerve system either orally or genitally which is called the "prodrome" and that is the very first sign of herpes for a person who previously did not have herpes is is having symptoms for the first time. You can help yourself by going to your doctor or gynocologist and be tested with a blood test. Although there is no cure for herpes, there are very, very good anti-viral drugs available through your doctor to help you though a herpes episode to to lessen the symptoms and lessen the time that you have an episode.
I hope this information has been helpful to you. If you are still unsure you should have a talk with your doctor about how to prevent getting herpes either orally or genitally. I hope all turns out well for you....:)

Herpes, genital or oral, is very contagious, especially if he's got an outbreak. If he's on medication and he feels fine, he could still be in an active, infectious state and infect you unknowingly.
For genital herpes, whether he's having an outbreak or not, always, always, alwyas use condoms, everytime, no exceptions.
Whether proper condom use will keep you from getting genital herpes 100% I'm not sure of. Check with Planned Parenthood or some online sites like About.com for more info.

Genital herpes cannot be cured. Once infected, the virus stays in the body for the rest of the individual's life
Research suggests that the virus can be transmitted even when there are no symptoms present, so that a sexual partner without obvious genital herpes sores may still transmit the illness. In fact, asymptomatic spread may actually contribute more to the spread of genital herpes than do active sores. Oral Herpes can cause Genital Herpes and Vice versa.
Herpes simplex viruses (human herpesviruses 1 and 2) commonly cause recurrent infection affecting the skin, mouth, lips, eyes, and genitals. Common severe infections include encephalitis, meningitis, neonatal herpes, and, in immunocompromised patients, disseminated infection. Mucocutaneous infections cause clusters of small painful vesicles on an erythematous base. Diagnosis is clinical; laboratory confirmation by culture, PCR, direct immunofluorescence, or serology can be performed. Treatment is symptomatic; antiviral therapy with acyclovir, valacyclovir, or famciclovir is helpful for severe infections and, if begun early, in recurrent or primary infections.
Please see the web pages for more details and images on Genital Herpes and Herpes simplex virus.

You don't say if it's genital herpes or oral herpes.
most everyone in the US and japan has oral herpes (you get it from a kiss from
your grandmother is the most likely cause of contacting it)
oral herpes isn't bad. it might actually be good to get oral form of herpes on your genitals 'cause it will give you some limited immunity from genital herpes. (last I heard the scientists and the lawyers at the pharmaceutical company were still argueing that point).
genital herpes is quite painful however. it's annoying. but from what I hear, most people don't even know they have either oral or genital herpes.
google some of the herpes sites and learn.
Oh, and condoms do NOT protect you from herpes 'cause the surrounding tissues come in contact with the other person. ANyone that says otherwise is ignorant !!!

It can be contagious...you didn't say if it was oral or genital. You shouldn't do anyting obviously if there is an outbreak or if he has any tingling. Try Yahoo Health for more info.

I have a friend who has herpes, and yes it is very contagious. You should always use a condom, even if there are no signs of outbreaks, on his part. And, there is no cure for herpes. Sorry.

There are two herpes simplex viruses: HSV1 and HSV2. Usually one of them causes cold sores and the other causes genital herpes (I forget which is which) but the two viruses are virtually identical. Either virus can and does cause disease at either end of the body and both are highly contagious.
