hey, If you need to be checked for STDs, go back to your doctor or go to Planned Parenthood so they can do the appropriate tests. You will need to give urine samples or blood samples to test for some STDs. A pap smear looks for HPV (1 STD), and precancerous changes.

Most STD tests that are done only detect if you are positive for Trichamonas, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and Yeast. It does not show if you have HPV or HIV. A pap test or Pap Smear is a preventative test to check for cells that could indicate early signs of cervical cancer or irregularities. This is how HPV is commonly diagnosed. On that note, if you are under 26y.o I suggest you ask about the Gardisil Vaccine to help prevent you from getting 7 of the main strains of HPV. If you have anymore questions, just give me a buzz and I will be glad to help if I can.

When you go for a pap smear in the future ask your doctor if they are checking for STD also if not request it. Go back to the Doctor who did the pap or to a women's clinic and request that they test you specifically for STD if you are concerned! Good Luck!

pap smears won't detect an std if they didn't call u that means u didn't have any abnormal cells in ur cervix but if u want an std test u ahve to ask for it but if ur affraid to get it done at ur normal ob go to planned parenthood they will hook u up for about $35 and they also will run an hiv test if u like

A pap smear is to look for abnormal cells from your cervix...not an STD. It is trying to detect cervical cancer, pre-cervical cancer or dysplasia. At my office, if you get a normal result, you get a postcard in the ail within 2 weeks, if not you call to find out why. You would have to ask the office where your pap was performed how they notify you.

like the other answerer said, paps are not for the purpose of checking for STDs, but yes, they can detect the presence of some...like the HPV virus.

Call your doctor and have the specific tests done (pee/blood samples required). Might as well check for HIV while you're at. Get some peace of mind.

If they dont call you, they usually mail you out a result data sheet stating everything is fine. But if they call you and recommend you make another appointment with the doctor, then that usually means you had an abnormal pap results, but not always.
Good Luck

Why didn't you tell the Gyn you have an STD so that you can be treated?
A pap doesn't always detect STDs. For instance, it does not detect genital warts.

They have to test for them- which I don't believe is done regularly-go to the free clinic or health dept and get tested
