Its generally only fatal when it attacks people who are already sick or people like the very old or very young. In a normally fit and well person it will make you weak for a while but can be cured in a matter of weeks by taking antibiotics xxxx

Sarah,

Since you know you have pneumonia, and since you are healthy enoough to ask the question here, make me think that you have a very good chance of a complete recovery in the couple of weeks it'll take to cure it.

As long as you take all your medicine.

Pneumonia is a serious infection, but it is almost always treated, and we almost always recover from it.

What has happened to you? Well, that depends on which of the six kinds of pneumonia that you have, bacterial, viral, mycoplasma, pneumocistis, rickettsia, and mechanical, but the result is pretty much all the same. You have fluid in your lung or lungs.

Now, the two most common types are bacterial and viral, in not quite equal numbers--bacterial is the most common form in adults. Both start the same way, with fever, chills, chest ache, and cough. In fact, it's common to mistake the onset of pneumonia with the flu. The persistent cough and the sputum show that it isn't.

I saw my first x-ray of an infected lung in an ER in Chicago, with the attending doctor pointing out the spidery white lines in the lung showing the places fluid had built up in the affected lobes. That's the biggest problem with pneumonia. The fluid cuts down on the volume of air your lungs can handle, and it gives bacteria a great place to grow. But whichever is the agent of your infection, you have fluid in your lungs. It's pretty nasty stuff, but the medicine will kill the bugs causing it.

That's because our antibiotics are very good against bacterial pneumonia. It can be very uncomfortable, but it's rarely fatal. There is a vaccine against the most common agent of bacterial pneumonia, a streptococcus bacterium, but it's rarely needed.

Viral pneumonia is much like bacterial in its symptoms, but while there are antiviral drugs for treating it, they are not really a cure. These drugs give your own immune system a better chance to kill the virus faster. In the vast majority of cases, that's what happens. It's really hard to die from this, too.

There are other forms of it, mycoplasma, something between a bacteria and a virus, pneumocistis pneumonia, caused by an agent similar to a fungus, rickettsia, aspiration pneumonia, caused by inhaling chemicals, food, dust, sea water, and other things not intended to enter our lungs. They don't always cause pneumonia, but they can. You haven't been trying to breathe the water in the city pool, have you?

There's also parasitic pneumonia, but that's rare in America.

Treating pneumonia is almost always pretty straightforward, and what drugs are prescribed should be continued even after symptoms disappear. The entire course of drug treatment must be followed, because relapses can be a real danger, and relapses are often worse than the initial infection.

Usually, pneumonia is cured in two weeks. Occasionally a little less, sometimes a little more, but unless you doctor says otherwise, figure about two weeks. You won't have the serious symptoms after a while during that time, but you could still be infected.

So take your medicine. All of it. That's the fastest way to get over pneumonia.

And take all the rest you need. With pneumonia, you cannot make your recovery go faster than it will go. Don't push it. You will recover in the length of time it will take and no faster.

You do not want a relapse.

Have a good recovery.

The more late the pneumnonia is detected the higher chance of dying from it...but of course, once pneumnonia gets severe, it will affect the person's quality of life because you will have more and more severe symptoms...if you have some respiratory symptoms, it is better for you to see a doctor now than wait till it gets worse. Pneumonia can be cured with antibiotics prescribed by a doctor and there are many treatment options, but it will not be fast....

I had bacterial pneumonia when I was 14. I almost died from it. Had I not gone to the doctor a second time after he diagnosed me with "just a cold", I would have smothered to death from all the bacteria in my lungs. Luckly I went back and was immediately taken to the hospital and hooked up to an IV with anitbiotics in it. So it is possible, but the doctor found it very strange because it usually only happens to people with immune deficiencies. But I agree that some kind of autopsy and chemical screen should be done on the body to rule out homicide due to the unusual circumstances around the death.

inflammation of the lungs....that is pneumonia. if these kind of infection / health problem not treated ...well, the prognosis is poor.
pneumonia is curable, and can be detected. severe chills, high grade fever, headache, cough, chest pain..these are some of the sign and symptoms of pneumonia
the treatments are bed rest increase fluid intake, prescribed antibiotics ,analgesics and oxygen inhalation if necessary...
to get rid of these.... if you had a cough and associated with fever... beteer visit a physician ,he will assess you. he will prescribed some medication drugs and might be he will advise you to have a chest x-ray. follow the treatment regimen...religious in taking those antibiotic drugs, he will advise you to have some good rest and more fluid intakes.
early detection ...better prognosis ( outcome of the disease process)

If you're generally fit and healthy, the chances of dying of pneumonia these days is very small, I think.

Look after yourself and take all your antibiotics. You'll be fine.
Have you got someone looking after you?

I'm not sure what type of pneumonia you have, you should probably go to your doctor and find out if you have walking pneumonia(you get medicine and go home) or the other type of pneumonia(where you should be admitted to your local hospital for treatment)

If you are healthy, a very slim chance. Most people who die from pneumonia have immune system problems either brouhgt on by age or disease. Since you are strong enough to be on your computer typing, you'll be fine.
