My mother has told me she has been having a slight discomfort in her esophagus for a couple of months ( she says she feels the heaviness in her chest) when swallowing any type of food, mainly in her chest area which spreads up to her stomach. Any suggestions?

Sounds like damaged esophagus. Some reasons:

(1) Is she on Fosamax or another medication for osteoporosis? They can damage the lining of the esophagus and make it painful to eat. It's why they tell people to be upright for 30 min following taking the medication and drink lots of water with it.
(2) Some cancers
(3) Eating a spicy food that burned it

She'll have to see a physician to have her esophagus looked at.

I have something similar. It's just really bad heartburn. Does she ever feel like she can't swallow the food? She needs to talk to her doctor about it. Having stomach acids in your esophagus continually can lead to stomach and esophagal cancers. And if the food gets stuck, it can aspirate into the lungs and cause pneumonia. An acid blocker med should help her (if this is what she has) but obviously, only a doctor can prescribe it.

That sounds like it could be a simple case of heartburn but I`m not a physician by any stretch of the imagination so really, if your mother`s symptoms worsen or do not get resolved by themselves within a few days, I would tell her to consult her doctor!

If she is scared or worried about seeing a doctor, tell her to take a trip down to her local pharmacy and see what they can suggest for her!

She may be suffering from a condition known as GERD, Gastric Esophageal Reflux Disorder. Acids are repeating in her stomachcausing her discomfort. She can take antacids for this or check with her doctor for a thorough check up.
