This issue upsets me as well.
It's all about conditioning - in this country we're grown up to believe that dogs and cats are part of the family - and rightly so. But animals like cows, pigs, sheep, and birds like chickens and turkeys are seen as not worthy of any respect and can be tortured to death for food. It amazes me that in this country (UK) someone could be arrested and sent to court on charges of animal abuse to a dog or cat or even a mouse, and yet farm animals are slaughtered everyday in horrific ways and very few people even bat an eyelid. Is it just me or is something very wrong here?
In some places dogs and cats are eaten as dinner, so it does depend on where you live and social conditioning. The way I see it is if we can be conditioned, we can be UNconditioned. We just need to look at the cruelty that's being done to the animals we've been taught to have no respect for, and see how wrong it is.

Its the whole thing about domestic animals. You can easily have a dog or cat as a pet, but not many people have turkeys and pigs therefore don't get emotionally attached to them like they would with a dog or cat.
People in dog and cat in places like China.

Dogs and cats are eaten in certain areas of the world. The reason why dogs and cats are not eaten in most of the West is because they are traditionally considered to be pets, animals to be looked after as part of the family, though why this is I don't know. Turkeys and pigs and other animals like that, meanwhile, are traditionally animals to be eaten, and are usually just reared for that purpose. Why this is I, yet again, don't know. It seems a little hypocritical of meat-eaters, somehow. In some parts of the world certain animals that are thought of as pets are also eaten, like in France, where horses are traditionally eaten.

because most turkeys and pigs have not been domesticated to protect the home or catch vermin, like cats and dogs. However, in some cultures dogs and cats are considered a food source.

Humans will eat anything they can to survive. We're lucky enough to be at the top of the food chain though there are some predators that will eat us too. Dog is a delicacy in some cultures. Cats (& other critters) get served all the time at those push cart taco stands in Mexico. Turkeys are stupid (at least farm raised ones) and deserve to be eaten. Pigs are best cooked whole in an underground pit for a day and then dug up & eaten. MMMmmmm MMMmmmm. If it weren't for meat eating humans you wouldn't be here to complain about it & have your "Hollier than Thou" attitude!

Dogs and Cats are fellow meat eating predators. And they were smart enough to become our friends in ancient times. Pigs and Turkeys, well, they just taste so darn good.

Because here in this country we look at dogs and cats more as pets and part of our families.
In some countries they eat dogs.
In India they don't eat cows.
It just matters where you are.

A vegetarian once told me that everyone draws the line somewhere, that is why vegetarians don't care about the insects and small creatures affected by the pesticides used on vegetables and fruits. I'm guessing these people that you are asking about have drawn the line at eating domesticated family pets.
Plus dogs are sweet!
