ok I took an HIV test about a week ago and the results aren't in yet. Should I be worried??? It was a blood test taken at a clinic.

Generally - no news is good news - if the test comes out positive they will be breaking their necks trying to get in touch with you so that they can find out who you have slept with so that they can tell THOSE people to go get tested

First off, I think taking an "HIV" test is stupid.

Second, it is not an "HIV" test. It is an HIV antibody test.

Third, there are about 70 different conditions that could cause a false positive, including having the flu, being pregnant, or a prior pregnancy - the test is not specific to HIV antibodies.

Ask to see the package insert for the test. There will be language to the effect that "This test is not to be used for the diagnosis of AIDS."

Should you be worried? Probably not. Unless you are a crack/meth head, junkie, or gay prostitute. AIDS has never really left the original risk group despite what is said. Do you know any straight, non-drug using people with AIDS? I thought so. Some epidemic. (But I bet you know some people that had that terrible, flemy cough that has been going around for the past 2 months)

I'm not sure...i know for a fact that HIV tests that count your viral load can measure undetectable but the patient is still positive. The viral load is a measurement of how many units of the virus are found within 1 milliliter of blood. The AMA has set a standard viral load that is considered undetectable at less than 20 units or copies of the virus per 1 milliliter of blood. Analytical sensitivity in your test of 53iu/ml is stating that your test will only accurately identify the virus within your system if you have at least 53 copies of the virus per 1 ml. Therefore you have less than 53 units in your blood so it shows undetectable. That doesn't mean you are negative necessarily, because it is possible to have less than 53 in your blood and still have the virus. Furthermore..HIV is also in your organs, which that test doesn't account for. So u need to have a doctor either go over your results or have a test with greater analytical sensitivity to be sure.

Don't worry about the test results. Even if the test results are negative, you have to do it again in every 3 months. Also don't afraid of any disease. It may come and go. Face the future with courage.

only you know if you should be worried.

if you're talking about the time it takes for the results to come back, no you shouldn't be. Taking 2 weeks is routine.

just because you haven't heard back doesn't mean anything.

They will call you one way of the other, the test doesn't take longer if it is positive. I'd be more worried if they called me immediately.
