yes, cheese is a dairy product. There is such a thing as soy cheese out there that your son could have which is made for vegans and people who are lactose intolerant. A variety of flavors can be found at a local health foods store. Hope this helps.

Note that aged hard cheeses (like old cheddar) have virtually no lactose. Stay away from fresh cheeses like cottage cheese, cream cheese, ricotta and some processed cheeses. Check the label. If it says anything more than zero grams of carbohydrates, there's lactose in it.

There are soy and rice cheeses that are nondairy, but there are lactose free cheese products made from milk as well. And lactase drops or pills also take care of the problem nicely,

Most definitely - cheese is made from milk, hence a dairy product. I'm lactose intolerant and I avoid milk, cheese, yoghurts and icecream made from animal milks.
You CAN buy your son cheese, yoghurts and icecream made from soya as that isn't from an animal.

You can buy your son soy cheese as a substitute - it is made from soybeans, not milk. A good brand I sometimes buy is called "Veggie Slices", has a green label, and usually can be found near the produce section of the store, near where they also keep the expensive dressings and odd-ball vegetables.
