Hypothyroidism / Underactive Thyroid / Hashimoto's Disease
All are the same and can be treated, not cured.
When your thyroid is unable to produce some or all needed thyroid hormone, your thyroid has been surgically removed or treated with radioactive iodine, and you now take thyroid hormone replacement (like levothyroxine), you are considered hypothyroid.
Weight gain can be controlled with a careful diet. Of course, the doctor can give you guideance with the diet that will be best for the patient. No patients are the same and tests will give the doctor the correct direction to take for drugs and diet.

Hypothyroidism is treated by thyroid medication, once the level of your intrinsic thyroid level becomes too low. If you have gained weight due to this condition, then it should be lost when your thyroid levels become normal. You will need to have a thyroid hormone test (tsh) periodically in order to determine that you are taking the right amount of medication.
Of note, there is a condition known as subclinical hypothyroidism which is only monitored and not treated with meds. If your TSH (look it up) is less than 10, it is usually not treated.

hypothyroid is pretty common. it is easily treated by taking Iodine-supplements, thyroid hormone supplements or sometimes by just a chance in diet. See your doctor which one is right for you. The weight gain will stop once you start correcting your thyroid problems. When you have hypothyroidism, your metabolism gets slower, causing you to gain weight. But with medication, once your thyroid hormones are back to normal level, your metabolism will return to what it normally was, and you'll stop gaining weight due to the hypothyroid. Other than that, you can also exercise to help your weight issue.
