Colds are caused by a virus that has to be fought off by your own immune system, so there isn't a medicine out there that will do anything to change how long you are sick for. Over the counter medicines help make the symptoms more tolerable, but you are still faced with a week to 10days of being stuffy, runny, sneezy, and achy. The more you rest and drink, and eat well, the sooner you feel part of the living world. The longer you keep pushing on and not resting, the longer it takes. All of the over the counter medicines are fairly good at treating the symptoms, it's really your choice of what you like to use. Cough drops will soothe the scratchy throat, but hard candy works just as well. Warm or hot liquids feel good, but whether you like tea or coffee is not a big deal. Honey and lemon are fine additives to soothe, but don't have any magical properties of their own. Milk and milk products don't hurt anything but will make the mucous thicker and harder to cough/spit/blow out. Vitamins are okay, but won't work any miracles either. Nyquil and the nighttime cold preps work well, but so will Grandma's toddy. Cold treatments are big business, and likely to remain that way, because nothing kills them and everyone gets them. If you do stumble on a cure, you will be incredibly rich, and the world will be at your feet in gratitude. Meantime, pick whatever you prefer to treat the symptoms, buy the tissues with lotion to soothe your nose, rest, drink and eat well. You will feel better in about 4 days.

rest...medicine is not good for you when your sick. it dulls the pain but does nothing to shorten the span of your illness. take vitamins and relax if you can

you need:

tea with fresh lemon juice
vapor rub
nyquil

i promise this has worked for me on many occasions. if it doesn't you must have something else like a sinus infection.
