I agree with the above poster, the damage is done. But your body has accumulated toxins as well that need to be cleaned out. Fasting and exercise will help. The detoxifying effect of exercise comes through the lymph system - your circulatory system has the heart to pump it, but the lymph has only your muscles to move it and wash the body. You can get the most detox benefits with minimal damage just by walking 30 min in the morning on an empty stomach. Great for you. The other main way is a regime of fasting. Ori Hofmekler wrote a book called the Warrior Diet which talks a lot about daily cleansing. Harvey Diamond's Fit for Life Solution talks about a clean diet with periodic juice-only fasting (most doctors don't recommend a complete fast from food for more than a day). Juice fasting is FANTASTIC! Lots of energy. Cleans you out. If you are an athlete, you have damage in your body that needs to be repaired and toxins that need to be purged. Just sustained aerobic exercise will not detoxify you enough. You need the combo of a clean diet, fasting (as approved by your doctor) and the light exercise to clean out the lymph system. Too much exercise can create more toxins, however -- sustained aerobic exercises like marathons, athletic games, etc. Your liver does most of the de-toxing (since the accumulated stuff from smoking is not going to just stay in your lungs). But, you will still probably cough some of the black junk up anyway. Not trying to be gross, but that is exactly what happens in most cases. You may even experience intestinal problems as the toxins pass into your digestive system and are eliminated. That, too, is gross but normal. Hope that helps.

Yes, one of the best ways to enhance the detox of the lungs would be to do some regular deep breathing. To bring more oxygen into the lungs. One should also take some extra antioxidant supplements .

Part of the detox is exhaling

The best exhale exercise is sex or climbing 4 flights of stairs, 2 steps at a time :-)

Sex takes less time :-)

BTW 80% of the body detox is from the lungs

Hello I'm a nurse. Unfortunately the damage is done. However you can prevent any additional damage by taking control of this and just stop smoking. I hope you are able to use this information.
