My boyfriend has been having Dry (unproductive) cough for nearly a year now. He has gone to multiple doctors, had chest X-rays, blood tests, and a Cat scan and everything comes back negative (meaning he has no signs of anything wrong). The cat scan was the most recent. He is getting extremely aggravated and has no clue what it is and what to do. So far they have tried giving him Advair (didn't work), Albuterol (didn't work), Prednisone (didn't work), Ciproflauxin (didn't work), and he has tried cough drops, robitussen, Nyquil, dayquil, and other over the counter cough suppressants. If anyone has any idea or anything we can do please let me know. I am getting worried. The cough just keeps getting worse and it seems there is no end to this in the near future since the Doctor's are just saying "here try this" over and over with no results.

Oh and we both are non-smokers and he has a cat but he has no allergies to pet dander…

Please tell me all you can

That's good that he saw a doctor - he may want to see a respiratory specialized doctor.

He may have already heard this - post-nasal drip the most common cause of coughs that are not smoking or infection related, he may want to try a decongestant if he has not. Also, Tusslin Pearls may help (which might be nice in public or at night, may work better than regular cough syrup, prescription).

I had the same problem, when I saw other doctors they said I had chronic bronchitis, but my doctor disagreed. He finally diagnosed me as having "urban emphysema". I have lived in southern california all my life (51years) and have been breathing smoggy air and am paying the price for it. He gave me a Flovent inhaler, which is a steroid inhaler, I've been using it for a couple of years, and it has made a tremendous difference. He had me try to go without it once to see if it made a difference, and within three weeks I was coughing like before, so I'm back on it and probably will be from now on. Hope this helps.
