HPV - human papillomavirus - is what causes genital warts. There are about 100 strains that have been characterized. About 30 strains are typically transmitted sexually. There are a couple different strains that cause genital wart, a couple that can cause cancer, and the rest have few to no symptoms. 75% of women will become infected with one or more strains of HPV during their lives.

Common and genital warts are caused by the human papilloma virus or HPV. There are hundreds of known subtypes of HPV and probably many more that have not been typed yet. Some are more dangerous than others, and can lead to serious diseases such as cervical cancer.
