For a beginner, I suggest cooked rolls or veggie rolls.
1.Unagi - Broiled eels (no, it doesn't look like an eel. It's just a thin filet)... it's pretty good - no strong fishy flavor, glazed with a teriyaki like sauce.
2.Futomaki - egg, gourd, mushrooms
3.California Roll - crab salad, cucumbers, avocado and sesame seeds
4. Tempura Rolls (sometimes called Dynamite Rolls) - shrimp tempura
5. Kappa Maki (Cucumber Roll)
6. Smoked Salmon
7. Inari - tofu pockets filled with rice, no seaweed or fish.
If you're adventurous
8a. Tako (Octopus - cooked)
8b. Squid- cooked... both are chewy, but have a natural sweetness (no fishyness) that I like.
9. Tuna (Raw)
10 Salmon (Raw)

a california roll is always a safe bet. it's basic- crab, avocado and cucmber. then there are philadelphia rolls- just salmon and cream cheese. a lot of sushi places will have "cheat sheets" which tell you what is in each roll. that way you know just what you are getting. i would go for things that are cooked at first and then work onto the raw things. i would try going with someone that already eats it so you can try theres and you can get your own. i try to get a new roll each time i go and so does my friend so we can try new things. good luck! :)

Ravensgirl's advice is pretty solid. Start with the veggie stuff, then try some with cooked fish. Unagi is not raw and is very good.
At all costs...DO NOT get the sea urchin... that is the nastiest, slimiest thing I've ever experienced.

sushi kindda sucks for me, when i tried it few years back, i almost want to get the sushi out of my mouth and throw the pieces of it in that sushi shop.
but for the sake of being polite to them, i chewed and swallowed it slowly. but it is experience though, just tried it, im not regretted it. maybe it sucks or maybe u'll like it :)

I cant do full on raw fish, so maybe you could do like me then step it up, I only do smoked fish, so it's like its raw but it's actualy cooked. Salmon & tuna would probable be the easist for you to get down. My fav is Philly Roll, it's Salmon, slice of avacado, & cream chesse.

Nothing too strong. Ease yourself in. Personally, I find Unagi to be really tasty, but some people aren't into eel. If you want something mild, tuna is surprisingly good.

cucumber rolls......nigiri - tuna or shrimp
Lot of folks are partial to California rolls...I prefer Rainbow rolls which have different fish on each invidual roll.
