They have to eat more calories coming from vegetables and vegetable products than those they would normally eat coming from any other type of food because vegetable calories are carbohydrates that are easily consumed.
If a normal diet suggests 2 000 kilocalories per day, they have to have an average intake of 2 300 - 2 500 kilocalories per day in order not to maintain their normal weight.
Animal fat which is the most dangerous for gaining weight is the most fatty and if this lacks from their diet they have to replace it with more carbohydrates and plant oil.

There are two ways this question could be answered: How many calories vegetarians *actually* eat, and how many they *should* eat. The answer to the first part can vary a lot, depending on the person and the type of diet that they have. If a vegetarian is eating a lot of high fat cheese and junk food, they will likely be taking in more calories than someone who is focusing on less calorie dense foods.
How many calories should a vegetarian eat? The same number of calories as they should eat if they were eating meat. Our bodies' caloric needs do not change much based on diet, but has more to do with resting metabolism and the amount of exercise and activity the person is participating in.
A calorie is a measure of the amount of 'energy' in a food. Just because you are eating different foods doesn't mean you will need to take in more calories. You may need to eat more foods on a vegetarian diet to reach the same number of calories as someone who eats foods higher in fat, etc.
On average, people need about 2000 calories per day. Some people need less, some need more - it is very individualized.
ETA: 800 to 1200 calories per day is much, much too low. 1200 calories is the lowest number anyone should eat on a regular basis, but even that is risky. It is difficult to get all of the nutrients you need with such a small amount of food.

The average vegetarian consumes around 800 to 1,200 calories per day. Vegetarians also have a lower body mass index from not eating meat.
Vegetarians have a lower intake of total and saturated fat when compared with non-vegetarians. Saturated fat is found in meat and dairy, and with the elimination of meats from the diet, vegetarians are likely reducing their saturated fat intake. Vegans and vegetarians have a higher intake of "good fats" found in nuts, seeds, and olive oil, for example.
On average, the weight and BMI of both male and female vegetarians is about 3% to 20% lower than that of non-vegetarians, and this reduction in weight can be associated with health benefits such as lower rates of obesity, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. The positive effects of a plant based diet are evident and this type of diet is an excellent way to improve one’s health.
