The wasabi we get in the (USA) supermarket and japanese restaurants is regular horseradish and food coloring to tint it green.

The real stuff is had in Japan, but in limited supply and very expensive... Its phonetically identified as hon-wasabi (true wasabi).

So most likely you're experience is with regular horseradish (Armoracia rusticana), mustard powder and food color.

Wasabi is a plant also known as Japanese horseradish. It is a member of the cabbage family. Spice is extracted from the root of the plant by grating it. The taste of wasabi is spicy but it's not felt on the tongue it's felt in the nasal passage, this is caused by the vapors of the plant. The leaves and other parts of the wasabi plant are also used for flavoring. Horseradish is a substitute of wasabi, mustard and food coloring is added to get a similar taste. Wasabi is commonly served on raw fish or sushi.

It's the Japanese version of horseradish. It comes from the root of an Asian plant. Almost all sushi bars serve imitation wasabi because the real stuff is too expensive. Real wasabi is made from the wasabi plant but wasabi is also made from horseradish, mustard seed, and green food coloring (sometimes Spirulina), often as a powder to be mixed with water to make a paste.

Culinary uses, History and Cultivation.
Wasabi is a condiment traditionally served with raw fish (sushi and sashimi) and noodle (soba) dishes in Japan. The ground root-like rhizome pungently flavors many foods in Japanese cuisine and its bright green color adds color contrast, for which Japanese dishes are famous. In the last twenty years, because of low supply of fresh Wasabi rhizomes, substitutes made of mixtures of horseradish, mustard and food coloring have taken the place of freshly prepared Wasabi. Other parts of the Wasabi plant are also used. The leaves and petioles are picked or can be powdered for use as Wasabi flavoring, used now in many foods.

Wasabi (Japanese: ワサビ, 山葵 (originally written 和佐比) ; Wasabia japonica, Cochlearia wasabi, or Eutrema japonica) is a member of the cabbage family. Known as Japanese horseradish, its root is used as a spice and has an extremely strong flavour. Its hotness is more akin to that of a hot mustard than a chili pepper, producing vapors that burn the nasal passages rather than the tongue. The plant grows naturally along stream beds in mountain river valleys in Japan.

wasabi is made from the wasabi plant root. it is a green root that resembles a carrot. to make wasabi you just ground it down. but most wasabi in the u.s. is horseradish ground and died green because real wasabi is really expensive. but the flavor of real wasabi is really different from what your used to it's hot but the best way i can describe it is it has a much cleaner taste and is not as sharp and horseradish

As for the dog question, I did not mean to hurt your feelings.

However I think it reprehensible that someone spend that much money on an animal that does not create wealth for them. I do not live in North America currently. I visit at an orphanage in my town where the children do not always have enough to eat ,where the building they live in has only chain link fencing on one of the walls (it has a cool climate in winter- not tropical), the bathroom they use has only 3 walls - the open wall looks out to the road and the main outside yard- and no roof. They have no shower or bathing facility so they bathe in a gutter in the middle of the house (it used to be a barn, by the way) with cold water from a bucket.

There are a lot better things to do with your money than to spend $1000.00 on a dog. That was my point.

Merry Christmas.

It's made from the root of a plant in the Brassicaceae. It is related to but not the same as, horseradish.
