I take AlkaSeltzer Morning Relief every morning which has large amounts of aspirin. Over long period of time what might this do to kidney function? my feet, ankles and hands have been swelling every day and back hurts in kidney area. Could all this be an effect of this medicine?

Please go easy on the aspirin! I have had a kidney/pancreas transplant and was told after the surgery DO NO TAKE ASPIRIN or any products containing aspirin. My heart specialist did put me on an 81 mg baby aspirin per day and the transplant team allowed it saying the benefits outway the risks. Being told not to take aspirin after the transplant because it could affect my kidney function scared my enough to listen. You need to see your doctor ASAP-swelling feet etc. and a backache...Go.

Aspirin can be hard on the kidneys just like any med that is overused. All meds react primarily in liver and/or kidneys. They have to be processed somewhere.

The Sodium in Alka seltzer may be more the culprit. Sodium = salt. Too much salt causes you to retain water. (swollen ankles can be caused from that). But not just that.

Go to the doctor. You might have a kidney infection.
