My step daughter is exhibiting signs of Type II diabetes and has an insulin test scheduled for Tuesday. What does this entail for her if this is in fact the case (she is 11 years old)? Right now she appears to have too much insulin in her system. I always thought diabetes was the other way around. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

How do you know she has too much insulin in her system ?
If this is the case, she may have type 2.More children are developing type 2 at an early age if they are overweight.
Type 2 is when your body makes too much insulin or to little and your body simply cannot absorb it.So your body produces extra insulin , adding on the pounds and making the problem worse.
Type 1 must always be controlled by insulin and type 2 can be controlled by medication, diet and exercise.
I wish you both the best. There are zillions of sources for information if this turns out to be the case.

#1: are you sure it's type 2? Type 2 is diet controlled.
You can't have too much insulin in your system- at least not with Diabetes- diabetes is caused by your pancreas not producing insulin to break down the sugar in your blood stream- so your blood glucose level would be high, not your insulin level.
(My daughter is 5 and has type 1 diabetes)
IF you think she might be diabetic- DO NOT WAIT until Tuesday- take her today! One day could be a HUGE difference between her going into a coma or being ok!!!

Type 2's USUALLY HAVE TOO MUCH insulin, caused by their insulin resistance. Unlike Type 1 diabetes, in Type 2, the pancreas makes insulin, but the cells do not respond to it. So they crank out more hoping to lower the blood sugar level.

Type 1, the form of diabetes usually seen in kids, IS a deficiency of insulin due to the immune system destroying the insulin secreting cells.

Type 2 in kids should NOT be happening (my apologies if she has MODY, a rare genetic form of Type 2). It is almost entirely preventable. If she is overweight, get her on a diet and exercise plan NOW. Type 2 diabetes this early may mean she might not live to see her 30th birthday unless you make changes.

Usually they do a GTT glucose tolerance test. drinking a very sweet drink, and taking blood samples.
yound people usuallly have diabetes , type 1
little or no insulin production, usually thin or under weight, and voids alot. But if she is overweight she can exhibit type 2 resistant to insulin the body makes. or is not making enough.
If the GTT is normal, she might have what is called diabetes insipidus, which is really not diabetes, its a different hormone problem with the Antidiuretic Hormone, not insulin hormone. However, if she has too much insulin production sounds like a abnormal pancreas production or disease.

No, if she has that, she has type 1 diabetes. Not type 2.

I believe that she will be given a sugar drink, and/or injection. Then blood will be taken at specified intervals to measure the amount of glucose in her system.

type 2 can also be when your body doesn't know how to use the insulin your body is creating.
