My 3 year old sometimes coughs after she has gone to sleep and only when she coughs she has trouble catching her breath for no more than 3 seconds. She coughs and then it sounds like she gasps while coughing for a few short seconds. After that, she goes back to sleep with no problems. Has anyone heard of this or had a child who does this. Do you think it is asthma? She also has a stuffed up nose at night but her nose always has hard boogers in it. If I clean out her nose, then her nose isn't stuffed anymore. I am calling her brother's allergist today to set up an appointment. I think she might have allergies like him. He never did the coughing and not able to catch his breath though.

My 5 month old has asthma and this is exactly what he does at night. His asthma is very severe though, he takes breathing treatments, etc. He also has severe allergies, so taking your child to get checked for allergies and asthma is exactly what I would suggest. Good job mom!! Just a small note, never feed your child anything that isn't what children should consume without consulting your doctor, especially in this case, your child could be allergic to almost anything, you have no idea what they are allergic to yet!!

Sounds like asthma or allergies but there is such a fine line between both, docs normally do not diagnose until after age 6. She may grow out of it. In the meantime, get her checked. They may suggest inhalers.

Dust may be causing the cough. Check her room - stuffed animals and carpeting may be the culprits. Good luck!

Put her bed on a slight angle head up this will keep everything down. Use honey and lemon for the cough. Fresh air is also good. But always go to a doctor if theres a problem
