Don't know if this is true, but a friend in Texas told me BBQ involves using some kind of sauce and grill involves using some type of seasoning that is either sprinkled on or rubbed in.

Grilling is cooking a meat or vegetable over a grill heated by either charcoal briquettes or gas. If using the gas grill, cooking time is significantly shorter, as you have full control of the temperature and timing. Charcoal grilling takes more time, but is usually tastier. BBQ or barbeque is a method of grilling that is extremely slow cooking over charcoal briquettes on either a kettle grill or a smoker or very low gas flame (charcoal only for BBQ purists) and combines either a seasoning rub or marinade prior to cooking, and generous basting with some type of sauce. Often, flavorful hardwood chips or chunks are added to the fire, especially when using a smoker, to add flavor to the meats indirectly. Also, fresh herbs such as rosemary or thyme can be tossed on the flames to the same effect.
Different types of sauces are used depending on what geographical area the BBQ event is taking place. In the US, most sauces are vinegar based but a few are tomato or vegetable puree based. BBQ tends to be associated with large outdoor parties in the US, since it is such a long, slow cooking method, and as such is not done on a regular basis. Many people in the US simply grill their foods and brush with a commercial or homemade BBQ Sauce (again, differs by region) to achieve the BBQ flavor in a more convenient manner.
Bon Appetite!

The word "barbecue" has come to be applied to anything cooked on a grill, or even in the oven if a spicy tomato based sauce is applied. There are a lot of different styles of spices and sauces that different cooks apply, but those have nothing to do with what defines real barbecue. Barbecue is not a dish, or a cooking device, it is a method of cooking, just as grilling is. Barbecuing is the process of cooking meat at low temperatures for long periods of time. According to Chris Schlesinger, owner and chef of The East Coast Grill restaurant in Cambridge, MA., "Barbecuing is a process whereby a large cut of tough meat is cooked by the smoke of a hardwood fire at low temperatures (210 degrees or less) for a long period of time, with doneness determined by the meat's tenderness."
Grilling, on the other hand, is done over the direct heat of a fire. The object is to sear the outside and concentrate the juices on the inside. The grilled flavor is caused by the searing, or browning, of the outside of the food.

Nothing!
If you live in the states you'll probably call a barbecue a grill,
here in the UK, we call a barbecue a barbecue.
A grill in the UK is what would be called a broiler in the US.
