A cardiac arrest sometimes occurs during a massive heart attack. A heart attack occurs when the blood supply to the heart is interrupted, either by a blood clot, or a build up of fats in the arteries. Chronic hypertension can also weaken the heart muscle and cause a heart attack. The severity of the heart attack depends on how many arteries are blocked, to what extent, and how much damage has been done to the heart muscle.

While a heart attack is generally treatable depending on its severity if help arrives in time, a cardiac arrest requires immediate intervention if the person is to survive. Since a cardiac arrest means the heart is not beating, its imperative that CPR be administered followed as rapidly as possible by the use of a defibrillator. A defibrillator will only work if the heart is in v-fib, or ventricular fibrillation. There are times when a defibrillator should not be used, or cannot help.

Sometimes, cardiac arrest is brought on by a traumatic injury, such as an extremely hard blow to the chest. A traumatic arrest is less likely to respond successfully to a defibrillator.

A stroke is caused by a blockage of blood to the brain such as a clot, or again, hypertension.

A cardiac arrest is a type of heart attack. There are many different things that can happen to the heart, lack of oxygen, lack of blood, burst blood vessel, valve failure, and many more. They are all grouped under the general heading of heart attack. A stroke is normally a burst blood vessel in the brain that will produce enough pressure to damage the braib tissue and can affect mobility.
