Well, since all Type 1 diabetics need insulin, I assume you mean the best type of insulin.

People with Type 1 need a background insulin (called a "basal" insulin) PLUS a fast-acting insulin to cover meals and correct high blood sugars. This is called a "basal/bolus" routine. It matches the actions of the pancreas more closely than the older insulin regimes.

Most people use one of the new very fast acting analogues: Humalog, Novolog/Novorapid, or Aprida.

Analogues are better to use than the old "fast-acting" called Regular insulin, as they begin to work sooner, peak MUCH sooner, and have a shorter duration of action. They are closer to how endogenous insulin works in non-diabetics, although no injected insulin can ever be as precise as that, of course.

The best basal insulin is either Lantus or Determir. Unlike the older basal insulins like NPH, they do not have a peak. This means you do not have to have a scheduled snack or meal if you don't want to, and it reduces your chance of unexpected low blood sugar. Some people like the fact that they do not have to "feed the insulin", which happens when you have to eat extra food to match your insulin peaks, whether you are hungry or not.

Lantus even lasts 24 hours in some people, although most Type 1's need 2 shots of it a day in addition to their fast acting insulin.
If you wear a pump, Humalog is the most commonly used insulin, but any of the analoges are fine.

Hope this helps!

drug of choice would be insulin. A rapid insulin like novolog or R. And a long lasting one like lantus or N. Unless the patient uses a pump then only a rapid insulin is used. Only insulin will do for a type 1. Personaly I use lantus (30 units at 10:00 am and 15 units at 10:00 pm and with my meals i use novolg apx. 1 unit per 8-10 grams of carb) I am a type 1 adult diabetic.

Insulin is not a drug, it's a hormone and a catalyst.

So I'm going to answer your question if you are choosing a drug, in the 'mind-altering-druggie' sense.

I'm not a druggie myself, but based on what I know about 'drugs', I'd speculate and say cocaine in mild quantities. It looks like sugar, but really doesn't mess with your bg levels. In mild quantities, you should still have reasonably good judgement and be able to maintain bg control. If you are an addict and can't control an addiction, than you are toast.

Pot will give you munchies, bad for bg's.

Meth and crack will waste you and mess you up worse.

Alcohol is too unpredictable and you need a functioning mind to maintain db control.

Type I diabetes occurs in childhood and is the inability to produce adequate insulin. A type of insulin is prescribed (which type is based on individual control needs).

insulin.

Determining what insulin therapy is best for you is something that you and your doctor will determine. Get some good help from a nutritionist.

Oh, and don't forget your pharmacist.
