Speaking as a non-Asian who has never eaten balut (but has seen people freak out about it for no good reason, really, on 'Fear Factor'), I think it's because of the 'strangeness' of it to someone who's not familiar with it; we're used to eating eggs differently.

Europeans eat plenty of decidedly bizarre foods too, however (paging haggis, haggis, please come to the front desk), so it's only a lack of familiarity with the stuff. Assuming it's tasty, I bet if you fed it to a non-Asian tourist without telling him what it was, he'd like it, generally.

The idea of "eating a not totally formed baby duck" does freak people out. By the way, not all Asians like it or know what a balut is. Balut is eaten mainly in the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia and part of China.
It's also a matter of familiarity, eating a "still breeding" beef steak used to be disgusting for people who just arrived in North America.
So Balut remains a cuisine only enjoyed by few who are either familiar with it since young or who overcame their fear to taste the delicacy.

I am an Asian and one time my mom fed me balut when I was 6. I know it's duck now, but the day she gave it to me we visited a chicken farm. It made me scared of eggs until I was like 10, because I thought they would all contain chicken fetuses.

Looks like you don't have to be "non asian" to hate balut.

What is balut anyway?
