Steroids can lead to kidney failure. After your kidneys fail, you can last about 5 years on dialysis. Those on dialysis are hopeful that kidney transplant may be possible. There are also may professional football players who have died terrible deaths from steroid use.

If your doctor put you on steroids for lung disease you shouldn't be on it very long, just until the inflammation goes down so you can breathe better. But if he put you on prednisone 40 mg a day you will need to wean down according to the prescription. You don't want to stop taking them suddenly without being weaned down because they do something to the body's natural production of steroids. These are not the same kind of steroids that athletes abuse to build bulk. But they are still dangerous if not taken according to directions.
