This occurs when metabolism is upset as in starvation, excessive vomiting, and diabetes mellitus. Acetone is also excreted in urine. Caused by ketosis, a stage in metabolism occurring when the liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies which can be used by the body for energy. This happens in conditions of starvation, which would be explained by the anorexia. It also is found in people who are on a high-protein, low-fat diet.

Normal metabolism uses carbohydrates, fats and proteins in that order to provide the body with energy. If you are consuming too few carbohydrates, your body will start to burn more and more lipids (fats). This method of metabolism releases ketoacids into the blood stream, hence they become ketoacidotic. It is a very singular smell and does indeed smell like acetone. This same process occurs in a diabetic with hig blood sugar levels (different reason), and the initial two weeks of the Atkin's Diet (same reason). Needless to say, it's dangerous to mess with nature's processes. She needs to seek help for the anorexia and the services of a good Dietitian.

For clarification keep in mind that acetone is a ketone (a family of organic molecules with an oxygen doubly bonded to a carbon and the other two bonds to the carbon are other carbon bonds)

This could be different things. You may be diabetic or an alcoholic. When these levels are high it is usually a sign of and alcoholic or uncontrolled diabetes or in your case....starvation.

I believe...acetone...comes from ketosis...a sign that her body is digesting proteins only...
if she eats little, and is already anorexic (thin) than her body is out of sugars, and out of fats, her body is now EATING its own muscle tissues. Her heart will also suffer soon and she may die if you do not get her into a treatment facility SOON...

Either you mean ketones (called ketosis from the body breaking down and using stores it normally wouldn't) or the girl is drinking nail polish.

does she use nail polish remover to make herself puke?? nail polish remover has a chemical, i think it's called bitrex, but this chemical makes you throw up as soon as you drink it so you won't die.
some people make crank with it, the guy down below is right.
