If you are experiencing hoarseness, you may have strained your vocal chords. I did this while coughing when I had bronchitis and lost my voice. Resting your voice for a time should take care of strain.

This kind of laryngeal irritation is only temporary and will completely resolve with voice rest. Voice rest includes no singing, humming, laughing, throat-clearing, and loud/forceful whispering. You will be as good as new in a week or ten days.

I have damaged a few of my GF's larynx on accident but not sure if you can damage your own.
