Lung biopsies are performed in one of a handfull of ways depending on the overall health of the patient and on where the biopsy needs to be taken from. One type is called an open lung biopsy. This is when the doctor opens up the ribs and surgically removes a piece of lung tissue. This method is chosen when larger sections of lung tissue are needed and when the other techniques will not be successful. Another type of lung biopsy is the bronchoscope biopsy. This is when they put a tube down the patient's throat and remove the sample from near the bronchi. Another type is needle biopsy which is performed using radiographic equipment to guide the needle. It is done when the sample needs to come from near the chest wall. Finally, VATS is when they insert a small camera through an incision and guide instruments using that camera to remove the sample they need. Risks of all lung biopsies include air leaks, bleeding, and infections. These risks are less in the bronchoscope biopsy and the needle biopsy but can be seen in any of the types. Your doctor will help you in selecting the type that will be best for you. Good luck, and I wish you the best!
