I've been a vegetarian for roughly 5 1/2 6 years and recently my doctor suggested that I should maybe think about including chicken back into my diet(for personal medical reasons) I would probably never consider eating red meat again and I dislike fish to the point that I'd most likely never eat that again. I'd probably eat ham maybe(poor piggie) maybe not.

My question is how do I ease my digestive system back into this? Any idea what type of chicken(how its prepared) is easier and tastier to digest? Also I'm a little grossed out about eating meat again especially a bird so I'm wondering if theres anything I can do about the gag factor(I tihnk I might gag because its been so long)
Any tips wold be appreciated. Also if you have went back to meat after being a vegetarian how did it go? And how did you do it? Share your story please.
Thanks

my sister and brother-in-law both have done it and they were veggies for almost 20 years

my sister added fish and some other seafood back into her diet. she did it gradually by eating small pieces or fish or a few shrimp or scallops at a time until she was able to eat a full portion. she didn't say it was difficult on her system and I'm sure she would have. she wasn't vegan so she still ate cheese and other dairy. maybe that's what made the difference

my brother-in-law started back because he wasn't healing appropriately. instead of being able to bounce back from a fall in a few days to a week, it was taking him weeks at a time. he's over 50 and still very physically active and participates in sports. he jumped in with both feet and started eating burgers and chicken. it was rough at first. his body didn't like it and experienced mild diarrhea. after a week or so he was ok. he wasn't vegan either and ate dairy products and eggs.

I would suggest cutting it into small pieces and incorporating it into a casserole of some sort like tuna casserole or chicken and rice.

I was a vegetarian from the ages of 7 to 18, and for the past few years I have started eating some meat again. I understand what you are talking about when you say you get grossed out about the thought of eating an animal, so here are a few suggestions that helped me to start enjoying meat again. --> Try some vegetarian meat products and if you find something that you really enjoy, try the meat version of it. Its also good to try as many things as possible because you might never know what you may like, so if are eating with others try a bite of what they ordered. As far as preparing meats... I really like bacon and chicken tenderloins because they are easy to cook, neither of those really look like it comes from an animal (Like ribs or a drumstick), they have great flavor, and they can be used in pretty much any recipe. You might prefer to start with turkey bacon which has a lot less fat and still tastes pretty good. Another option is to make yourself some sandwiches or salads with a lot of vegetables and a little bit of meat just so you start to appreciate the taste. Goooood Luck!!

I used to be a vegetarian (well, a pescataria--I always ate fish) and I went back to eating meat. I'm still not a major carnivore but sometimes my body just craves animal protein.

My advice would be to start off with something like soups where the meat pieces in the soup are very small and the broth is made from animal stock but is fairly gentle on your system. Try Amy's organic line of soups or try something like Progresso chicken noodle if you don't want to make homemade soup. Try organic sliced turkey for sandwiches--add lots of sprouts, maybe some avocado, and cheese. Also, California pizza kitchen makes some tasty chicken pizzas. I think they have a Thai chicken pizza and I know they have a barbeque chicken pizza as well.

I was a vegetarian for 11 years and started eating fish occasionally for medical reasons too. I just have to eat small portions (I have been eating fish now for 2 years and it still upsets my stomach). I understand the thought of eating meat can literally be hard to stomach. But if you don't have your health, what do you have? Good luck!

I assume you are just grossed out by the whole matrixy factory-farm poopy blood and cut-beaks and torture thing? By raising and killing your own chickens, you can ensure that they have a good quality of life and that they are killed humanely. (Because you never know what nasty stuff chickens went thru when you are buying them at the store.) Just a suggestion. I would probably go back to eating meat if I raised and killed my own animals.

I was a vegetarian during college, when I couldn't afford to buy meat.

When I got my first real paycheck, I splurged on a HUGE Angus Rib Eye. My body adjusted quite nicely, though I was full quicker than I wanted to be.
