Considering that we eat most of our meals at home. We don't eat breakfast other than toast, cereal, or oatmeal.

It all depends. There is no "should cost." What do you like to eat? I know some couples who don't eat a lot of variety and spend very little. I've found that if my step-kids are gone for a week, I still spend the same dollar amount as when they are home... I just go for the porterhouse over the NY strip, lol. For my family of five, we spend about 800 -1000/month and we cook most of the time.

Here in the Midwestern United States, I spend about 80 dollars a week on groceries. That may go up a little in the winter when fresh vegetables are more expensive, but if I've stocked my freezer over the summer, the $80/week is pretty consistent.

So, that adds up to a little over $300 a month for two people, give or take.

I'm a single male vegan. I spend between $200-$300 a month. Sometimes i want to buy more and expensiver food. I wish i didn't spend so much and i'm a bargain type 'o' shopper.

For a couple, assuming both people eat equally, double the amount $400-$600.

There's no real "should" about it - it depends what you like to eat and what your budget is. Assuming you're vegetarian, I'd imagine the bulk of your shopping would be on fruit and veg, and packs of lentils, beans nuts etc? I spend a fair amount as I buy organic friuit and veg and get it delivered from a local farm. The rest I get from the supermarket and I hardly buy any processed food. I live in the UK and spend about £200 a month on food for myself and my 5 year old son. Sorry I don't know what that is in dollars.

Well, that's a hard one because if you eat soup or ramen noodles all the time you won't be spending much. We eat steak, roasts and seafood alot so we spend $300-$400 a month. In the past I have went thru some tight times and would only spend like $20 a week eating pork and beans and ramen noodles. lol My favorite cheap dish was mac n' cheese with a can of tuna added.

It depends a lot of what you eat. My husband and I don't eat processed food and enjoy cooking. We buy some gourmet food and quite a bit of organic products. We together spend $400-500 a month, but we live in Midwest. I guess in coastal areas it would be more.
Friends of ours, however, can eat hotdogs or mac& cheese for dinner and don't like vegetables. They said their grocery expenses don't go over $200 a month. Cheap, yeah, but at what cost? Eating cheap non-nutricious food...

Hey. I've read a site where this vegan/vegetarian guy lays out a diet on $13 a week for one person. I can't find it though! He's a doctor? and really into vitamins. He suggests beans, sprouts, veggies, etc. I would say that it would take $225-$500 a month. I live in Georgia.

I used to work in collections and part of my job was to help people estimate their budget to find discrepencies. When we figured groceries, we usually averaged it out to approximately $100 a person, but that is just an average. Also, that's in the midwest, so if your area has higher priced groceries, that could be inaccurate.

I would say no more than $750-800 a month. It depends on where you live and how much produce you eat. From your name, I'm guessing you eat more produce than anything, and if you're doing organics only count on maybe $1000 a month.
