Most cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) develop after repeatedly breathing in fumes and other things that irritate and damage the lungs and airways. Cigarette smoking is the most common irritant that causes COPD. Pipe, cigar, and other types of tobacco smoke can also cause COPD, especially if the smoke is inhaled. Breathing in other fumes and dusts over a long period of time may also cause COPD. The lungs and airways are highly sensitive to these irritants. They cause the airways to become inflamed and narrowed, and they destroy the elastic fibers that allow the lung to stretch and then return to its resting shape. This makes breathing air in and out of the lungs more difficult.

Other things that may irritate the lungs and contribute to COPD include:

Working around certain kinds of chemicals and breathing in the fumes for many years
Working in a dusty area over many years
Heavy exposure to air pollution
Being around secondhand smoke (smoke in the air from other people smoking cigarettes) also plays a role in an individual developing COPD.

Tuberculosis ? I don't think so.

I don't know re tuberculosis--but I was Dx'd with COPD last yr and spent 12 days in hospital. They vaccumed out my lungs and got out old tough phlegm and gave me antibiotics, Prednisone and Protonix). The pulmonary specialist said that the cause of mine was "silent reflux". I never smoked, but had a lot of bronchitis, pneumona at times, and colds. I never had "heartburn", therefore, the "silent reflux". He told me to get a cinder block to put under the head of my bed frame, so that the reflux didn't occur those 8 hrs/night that caused me the problems!! Such a simple solution, and it worked PERFECTLY! Just the 4" higher with the block laying on its side WORKED, and wasn't hard to sleep on. Higher, and I kept sliding down to the bottom of the bed! I have great BREATHING now and walk my 2 miles at a 4 mph clip with my disco tape! ")
Good luck!

Chronic bronchitis due to long term infection. This is the most common cause. TB is not a cause.
