My uncle was told that the front half of his heart was dead. Can you please tell me more about this? He has a pacemaker, and has had several heart attacks.
Thank You

It means that the muscle is dead from the blood supply being cutoff during one or more of his heart attacks. The part that is dead, of course, is not functioning. Note: I am not a doctor, but I've read enough about these things to know.

The coronary arteries feed the heart muscle bringing the muscle nutrients and oxygenated blood. Arterosclerotic plaques build-up in the arteries and either chronically block the artery or have an acute event where the plaques first become inflamed, then rupture, and suddenly block the artery. If this is something that has happened over a long time OR the heart attack was severe enough or not treated in a timely manner, then the heart muscle actually dies from being starved from oxygen and nutrients.

The front of the heart certainly involves the left ventricle which is the final chamber in your heart and pumps oxygenated blood throughout your body. As a result it is a very important area of your heart. All of the other chambers support this function.

Your uncle's pacemaker has to due with an irregular rhythm of his heart. It is possible that the irregular rhythm was contributing to his heart working inefficiently among several other reasons - like beating too slowly or him not being able to use medication to treat his conditions.

Despite the front of his heart being dead, a heart is a three demensional organ. You still have two sides, a back and a bottom that are all responsible for beating. Your uncle's condition is not great but I have seen people with this kind of history live decades. He needs to stop having heart attacks, though. Stopping smoking, controlling blood pressure, and getting cholesterol under control is very important - in fact his life depends on it.

I hope this helps.

The anterior descending coronary artery supplies the anterior wall of the left ventricle. If occluded necrosis and then scarring of the anterior wall occurs.
