My schools as a kid would never let us bring in things we had made at home, health risks they said.

I would go with fried rice. Easy to make, transport, familiar to kids, and cheap.

If you want something more memoriable, try pot stickers, which won't make the teacher's aneurysem burt to serve it to kids:

Or, Egg Foo Yung. Again, not messy, a bit different, but I've yet to meet a kid that doesn't like them. Just skip the sauce. This is a great recipe, but the suace doesn't add much to it and would be too much hassel.

If you are set on desserts though, here is a recipe for almond cookies:

Never tried it, but it seems to have good reviews.

I would, for the body, take a picture of his face(I hope you have a scanner to scan a picture and enlarge it), cut it out and paste it onto the poster, using some sort of woolstrings for hair. For the torso I would simply use another type of posterboard, cut it approbiately and decorate it with colorful little pieces of fabric. For the shoes I would cut out of a magazine shoes that fit with the size of the entire body(so they won't look too big or small). Then draw the arms in the directions needed and glue on a little more fabric to go with the fabric of the torso. For added looks I would get some sort of colored glitter paint and frame the posterboard to actually make it look like a real picture. Another idea would be to glue pictures of each event of his life into the shape of a body with shoes from a magazine(cut them out, put then glue them on a piece of cardboard and then cut that out and glue it to the legs of the body), always making sure though that you have a one picture of his face which you can 'decorate' with a few brown or black woolstrings or other type of yarn to make it look like his hair. Framing it with some fancy type of paint like the glittery type will add to the looks. My son had a similar project when he was little and what we did, we took an old belt, some leftover white ties(from old curtains)and made sort of a zebra striped frame around the posterboard---it did earn him an A+. I actually had to put the poster high enough to let it dry properly because he kept on picking it up to look at it. It was a fun event, and he learned a lot from that(or so he says now)....Good Luck

All kids love chicken wings (but you're stuffed if there are any vegetarians!)

Marinate some chicken wings/drumsticks in chopped garlic and ginger, and soy sauce (add some water otherwise it would be really salty). Then roast with honey. This makes great finger food/starters/picnic food!

Fried Pancakes with Red Bean Paste. This is a traditional Chinese dessert. Just envelope a spoon of red bean paste with a pre-made crepe and fry it!

Try some pudding. You can find coconut, mango, almond and red bean varieties. You can find packages in most asian markets. They work just like jello, add some water or milk and heat it up until everythign disolves, then cool in fridge.

When I was in China we usually had fruit for desert. They love watermelon and oranges. Also, there is some yellow sticky fruit. They also have these little white rolls that you dip in a caramel sauce.

See if you can find a non-dairy mango, rice or green tea sorbet. Bring some Dixie cups and miniature spoons to serve.

Jelly is a universal favorite who cares if its Chinese or not - kids love multi colors - toss in a little boiled red beans or sweet corn before they set - presto! you got a winner!!
