I'm vegetarian. My mother bought me something very special that i been wanting for a very long time. Now, i realized that this has anchovies in it. My mother would have bought it unknowingly. Should I tell her, which would result in an immediate return and/or destruction of the food in question, or should i savor this food that I have craved for soooo long.

Depends on your reasons for vegetarianism.

If it's for health or personal preference (say you don't like the way meat tastes...) then... why not...

If it's for moral/religious/or ethical reasons... I'd say no... but, if it were for this reason, I don't really think you'd really be asking this question.

You clearly want to eat it. Go for it. You don't go to vegetarian hell or anything, I promise.

If you can pick 'em off, pick 'em off, but I suspect not -- anchovies are quite the trap, turning up as they do in salad dressings, Worcestershire, Branston pickle, etc, etc. Any vegetarian who likes bloodies has had anchovy; no matter what sort of conversation you have with the server, something gets lost, somewhere, sometimes.

As vegetarian outrages go, I rate it -2. You're not being one of those "vegetarians" who eats Kentucky Fried when they have a craving.

Still, it might put you in a weird spot with your mother. You might eat enough to satisfy yourself, and exclaim with shock that you just realised re. anchovies when you'd downed enough, so as to prevent a repeat purchase.

And good grief -- tell us what the food is already, please.

Personally, I would tell her that you've just realised that it contains anchovies and is therefore not suitable for your vegetarian diet. Otherwise, you're going to end up with a repeat performance.

What is the food?

Dont tell her cuz it might make her sad! but when shes not looking throw it away since anchovies are nasty tasting fish!! You can then tell her you ate it and not make her sad. Sometimes its better to tell a little lie to make your mommie happy! Maybe you can then find the food without hte nasty fish in it!!! What kinda food? I know someone that could probobly make it for you without fish! I used to put a-1 on my french fries then got told it had the nasty fish in it. now i got some made special for me that taste the same but no dead fish!!

I guess it depends on why you are a vegetarian. Would it be such a big deal to eat them? It might make you sick though depending on how long it's been. So decide why you are a vegetarian, and try to decide if the reasons are stronger or weaker than your desire to eat the food. Otherwise, just eat it. Life's too short to put such meaningless boundaries on your life that cause you to be unhappy.

Savor it. It was given in love and most people can't stand anchovies anyway

Take them off or eat them. I went through a similar situation recently. What I did was that I ate just a little bit of it, so I didn't upset my father.

what did she buy??

being vegetarian is your choice. which means that you follow it the way you wish. you can decide to eat this one thing, and just live with it, or not.

i was vegan for a really long time, and before, i was vegetarian. I remember when I was first starting out, it would be really hard.

i had cravings for certain things (especially durring part of my pregnancy!!!!), when i ate something "bad", i would do something extra to make up for it-- extra volunteer work at an animal shelter, etc.

its up to you
