Many people have mentioned that veggie burgers are made from soy. Many are, especially the frozen ones from the supermarket. (If you specifically want to know what was in the one you tried, look on the label of the package.) But just so you know, there are lots of different kinds of veggie burgers. Some are made from grains like oats or barley. Some can be made from various beans or lentils. I've even had one made from mushrooms. There's a huge variety out there. Try them all and find out which ones you like best. You can even try to make your own. I think the cookbook, "Vegetarian Planet" by Didi Emmons has some great veggie burger recipes.

It really depends which ones you buy. You can make a really delicious one using Kidney Beans :

Kidney Bean Burgers

Ingredients

1 can red kidney bean
1 large onion
1 clove garlic
1 teaspoon dried mixed herbs
salt
pepper
chilli flakes
breadcrumbs
olive oil

Finely chop the onion and garlic and fry in oil until soft.

Meanwhile drain and wash the kidney beans and mash them until they are soft.

Once the onions are cooked stir in the beans and mix well. Add the herbs and some salt, pepper and chilli flakes and taste the mixture. Add more seasoning if necessary.

Leave to cool for a few minutes and then press into 4 burger shapes. Dip these in breadcrumbs and fry in olive oil until browned.

The patty in the burger is usually made from soya, some tofu and other additives. The other ingredients to make up the burger are vegetables.

Just look at the ingredients on the box if it's got one, or if you've bought it at a restaurant ask the server.
