I expect they saw animals eating them and realised that the flesh was not harmful.

Also, in olden times --and even now in some of thecountries where durian grows -- there can be quite a stench from human and animal waste in the vicinity so the durian perfum wouldn't seem so bad.

I love durian's taste....

I buy frozen durian fruit in the Asian areas of Toronto Ontario Canada, jackfruit is nice to, when they fell from the trees and we discover to have some food value that was probably when humans took to eating them, most of the hotels in Singapore will not allow you to bring the one's you purcahsed in them, they have a storage hut, and give you a number, similar toa coat check to keep them outside.

I make ice cream with the ones I buy in Toronto, and I just found a durian paste in a Vietnamese store last month, looks like ripe banana's but the texture of marizpan.

Yah, how did they found out? I would love to know that. maybe bcoz of the smell? its just so sticky!.....wow so great....love the taste!
