Your father basically sounds like he had a stroke. If you have athersclerotic vascular disease, basically clogging or narrowing of the arteries, you can have it anywhere. One of two things could have happened. Your father had an unstable plaque that broke off and clotted the artery feeding part of the brain that relays information to the brain or to the optic nerve or a clot could have formed to block one of those arteries. If he has lost total vision and it is black and it suddenly happened, your dad nneds to go to the ER and be seen, he is at risk for additional strokes and may need to be placed on blood thinners if appropirate. He needs to see a doctor as soon as possible. Does he have a condition called atrial fibrilliation? If so one can form clots in the heart that can shoot up to the brain and this must be treated to decrease stroke risk. Please have your dad checked out immediately.

It could over a period of time. But I would recommend you go and see a optometrist for this problem.
