I had blood test done for Diabetes done a few months ago and it tested negative. Of course I was relieved, considering I was a classic risk example: overweight. Despite my being overweight, I am lucky to have a relatively healthy blood pressure and my blood cholesterol was normal.
However, I was born with Hypothyroidism (low thyroid gland activity). Could this affect the test result? Also, I may have made the mistake of having coffee that morning (but with no cream nor sugar).
I called up a doctor at a health clinic I go to (it's for people who have no health insurance and can't afford a private doctor) and asked him about this and he said that as long as the test result was not positive for Diabetes, I should have nothing to worry about.
Should I take his word for it or get a second opinion (even though it will drain my bank account)?
Anyone who is in the health field and can give me some feedback will be greatly appreciated.

It is possible just depends on the test they performed was it a Hemoglobin A 1 C. Did they do fasting test for you or someone you know. Hemoglobin A 1 C is generally is the most accurate one of them all in determing if someone has diabetes.

In spite of having coffee, when your blood test was normal, that indicates you are not diabetic.Another possibility is mechanical error which is always not avoidable. So if you have lingering doubt, get fasting plasma glucose and one more value 2 hours after ingesting 75 gm glucose at clinic. As far as your hypothyroidism is concerned,it looks primary in type.Risk of having diabetes when one is autoimmune hypothyroid is around 10% and the type of diabetes is type 1 rather than type 2,about which you are thinking.Do not worry.Discuss with your consulting doctor.

Your results are probably correct. Coffee would not cause your blood sugar to rise or drop. And if you had cheated on the fast, by eating any food during the time you were supposed to be fasting, it would have shown up as an elevated, or positive, result on the test.
