WHOA! It's Never okay to have unprotected sex! There are way too many things out there!

I'm assuming you have HSV. If not, only the first part of my answer pertains to you. And maybe the last... but I haven't gotten there yet.

It is true that you are most contagious during an outbreak. Actually about 3 days before an outbreak until any open lesion heals. BUT there is this tricky little thing called asymptomatic viral shedding. With AVS you can be contagious at any time without symptoms. There is no way to know when you might not be able to transmit herpes so it's best to assume that you can spread it all the time.

You can cut your risk of infecting your partner by half if you avoid sex during an outbreak and use condoms. You cut it in half again by using daily suppressive therapy.

Some couples in committed relationships chose not to use protection. This is a choice that must be made by both people after weighing all the risks.

I've been in the military, and so is my fiance. I've got to tell you, your boyfriend doesn't sound emotionally stable or mature enough for marriage anyway. You told him that you weren't ready for marriage, and he proposed. He makes you afraid to break up with him? I'd let your family know what's going on, and his. You can't stay with someone because he's threatening to harm himself. In the military, such behavior gets you tossed into the psych ward. I'd call or write to say that the two of you need to talk. As soon as you see him(in a public place), have a serious talk. As for you sweetie, you don't sound ready for a serious relationship either. You don't want to get married, but you accepted his proposal anyway. But you can't handle being without him for the time it takes for boot camp? When you're married to a soldier, you sometimes don't see him for months at a time. My guy was in Iraq for a year and a half! Then you mess around with your ex. Without protection. Having unprotected sex, besides leading to STD's, can also lead to A BABY. How long have you been out of high school anyway? You aren't ready for marriage, you're certainly not ready to raise a child for the next 18 YEARS. There's nothing confusing about it. Finish college, get your life together, use condoms.

Depends on the std but I would have protected sex b/c you can pass an infection even without having an outbreak.

When you feel prodrome or whatever they call it, you know, that prickly sting, and feel the lesions started, abstain from active intercourse.

If you feel okay then you should be fine. Valtrex does help with that though.

If you trust each other, and don't mind getting pregnant. Go ahead, but it would be safer to just use a condom.
